Start by going up over Norries Headland at the northern end of Cabarita Beach. The climb is short and it's the only part of any of our rides where you might get out of the saddle for a moment. Lock the bikes at the top and walk the last bit out to the lookout.
Then roll back down, head south through Cabarita and keep going to Hastings Point. The headland there sits at the mouth of Cudgera Creek and it's the other great lookout on this coast, with a path out along the point and rock shelves below at low tide.
Two headlands, one short ride, and a swim at either end if you want one. It's the ride we'd pick if somebody only had a couple of hours.
Through winter there'll be whales going past. You don't need binoculars or luck, you just need to stand still for five minutes and look out. Mornings are best, and by early afternoon the glare makes it harder.
Worth knowing
- Through winter you'll see whales from both headlands. That's not a maybe, it's pretty much a given, and you don't have to time it. Stop and watch for a few minutes and they turn up.
- Mornings are the pick. The light's better, the sea's usually flatter and they're easier to spot, so aim for the first half of the day.
- Take the lock. You'll want to leave the bikes and walk out to both points.

Short enough that the kids' bikes are fine, so this is the one to do as a family. The 26 inch and the 20 inch both handle the pinch up to Norries without anybody having to get off and push.
